If private funds for a hull recovery are present, the Spanish MoD should have little or no problem providing support of placing a warship with a few salvage personnel to retrieve the torpedo weapons after the boat is raised. If done at sea beyond 5KM from shore, the transfer is international. Most co-operative would be if military vessel is older submarine-tender and can take custody of C3 boat until torpedoes are removed, then bring to port in Malaga for memorial, but even if just a small military vessel with torpedo technicians to inert all torpedo weapons for safety it would fulfill the need…
This is a great page for memorial of all those lost during the battles leading up to WW2 and the boats and ships lost then.

Hello.
I’m writing from Palma de Mallorca, and I’m especially excited because when I was a little girl I heard many times stories around Submarine C3 at home.
My grandfather was part of the crew of this ship during his military service between 1929 and 1930 (you know that at that time that stretched over several years).
Although he was luckier than the sailors who have been unjustly buried by the sea, he also fought with them on the Republican side resisting until the end of the war in the naval base at Mahon. He was also, once the war finished, held in prison during six months in Cartagena’s penitentiary convicted for driving a coast guard boat from Palma de Mallorca to Mahon when Mallorca was captured by the “National Army”, “just hoping not to tell my name when every morning they read the list of those who were to be shot, “he said.
I know he would have liked to know the whereabouts of his beloved submarine and view it navigating on the surface again, but specially to know that all those comrades who lie there have received justice, admiration and the honor they deserve.
I send you some pictures, although they are dated in 1930, I hope they can contribute to document a little more about the history of C3.
A greeting.
Magdalena.

Well, after almost six years, the Court which investigates what happened in the unfortunate accident has decided. No one has assumed political responsibilities and from the various statements I stay with the minister Chacón:
“The government” completely respects and observes “the sentence, and she added that the real culprits are sitting there” in clear reference to former defense Minister Mr. Trillo.

FranciscoMaceira. -April 29, 2009 .- On December 12, 1936 Republican submarine C-3 was sunk in the waters of the Alboran Sea, four miles from Malaga. Best said it sank a torpedo fired from German submarine U-34, the operation named “Ursula”. A secret operation that benefited both the rebel side to Hitler, who could train his famous “Gray Wolves” to launch torpedoes against the Republican fleet. Although the first launch of the “Poseidon” (code name of the German submarine U-34) destroyers against Republicans had not been satisfactory, the C-3 was not as lucky …..

The families of the crew claim, 67 years after, from National Court of Justice to arise the C-3 “to give them a decent burial”
MADRID .-Asensio Lidón was in the deck of the submarine throwing the remains of the meal of the day come when guessed the wake of a deadly and whitish Nazi torpedo. The impact opened a hole in the bow and the explosion threw to the water to Asensio with the right elbow shattered. The man viewed floating two companions and sinking the other 37 between the roar of 1,000 tons of Republican steel death wounded way to the sea bed.
On December 12th, 1936 Asensio Lidón hustles on the surface with its 29 years. Today, the only crew member of the C-3 guard who is living with his 86 yeards old in total silence in a nursing home in northern Madrid. Maybe he shares the struggle of the families of those victims, who are going to law sue the MoD before the Audiencia Nacional by refusing to arise the submarine which can give decent burial to their 37 dead , caught a 68 meters deep in the splitted belly the C-3….

Although both boats sank in very different circumstances, have in common the gas oil stored in the submarine tanks containing 42 tons of fuel and 50,000 or more tons of fuel in the tanks of the tanker and the fact that after more than sixty years, the submarine is still emitting gas oil spills to the surface….
